January 2017 Recap

A new year, new opportunities.

2017 promises to be a banner year for homebrew in Minnesota. With HomeBrewCon 2017 in Minneapolis and the events that surround it, we are sure to make our impact on the community at large, and the NBA looks to make an impact on the community locally.

In the past we have engaged the local community in the from of beer education, beer events and a general involvement perspective. In the past we have setup brewing demonstrations at farmers markets, education sessions, and provided samples at other events to help raise money for local organizations. We loved doing these event and are grateful to the organizations for the opportunity to partner with them.

Going forward we will be focusing on homebrewing events and organizations. We will still be involved in certain events in Nordeast, like the Big River Brewfest and partnering with breweries in the area. These events connect us directly with beer people and brewers. Ongoing, we will be increasing our  involvement with our local homebrew stores this year. We will have a presence at one of the local stores at least once a month to reach out to homebrewers specifically. We will be doing brew days, education sessions and general QandA for homebrewers, our people. For our membership we are will continue to put a focus on education and experiments. Along with club experiments, watch the google group for announcements on extended tests, collaborations, projects, and profiles.

Recap

2017 Winter Party

First off, a big thanks for Northern Brewer and especially Chris Smith for lending us the space and taking some from his Saturday to make sure we stayed and line. We was also very gracious in providing some prizes for our competition.

We had a great turn out, thanks to everybody the came. With out you, its not a party. The food and the beer was awesome as always.

High Gravity Comp

The High Gravity comp at the Winter Party delivered! The competition was stiff, and really showed the quality coming out of the NBA. But, there were winners:

1st Adrian Swanson IPA #7
2nd Aaron De Boer Rum Barrel Aged Mexican Chocolate Stout
3rd Chad Oesterreich Ewe England IPA

Other Happenings

Barrels
After our members, our barrels are our biggest asset, and out of those barrels the Flanders style beer from barrel #3 (french oak) is one of our best beers. Beer from this barrel has won a number of awards and is just a great beer all around. This last weekend we emptied and refilled the barrel. This last beer was in the barrel for over a year and our patience is now rewarded. I’m sure some members will be bring this beer to the next meeting so watch out for it. We filled it for the 5th time with the same recipe as always and we look forward to the next empty.

HomeBrewCon2017

Are we prepping for HomeBrewCon? The social club? A backpack keg of Flanders? A bad-ass booth at club night?  Oh hell yeah!.  That means we need help. Be on the lookout for meetings and construction days on the google group email list. Remember that you need to be an active paying member to be on the list. Also remember that you need to be an active paying member of the AHA to attend HomeBrewCon. Use the links on the right side to join or renew your NBA and AHA memberships. When you use the AHA link on our site we, the NBA, will get a small cut of your membership. We will use these funds to build our   booth and help us make our NHC dreams a reality. With your AHA membership you also get  access to the Surly Wort Rally, Zymurgy magazine, the Brew Guru app and more. So do it, Do it right here.

Surly/AHA Wort Rally

On February 12th Surly is hosting an AHA Rally, what is an AHA Rally? Its a gathering of AHA members put on by the AHA. Attending members have the opportunity to; hang out, have beer samples, take a tour of the brewery, receive gifts, and win prizes. February Meeting @ Midwest Supplies

We are meeting at Midwest Supplies on Thursday the 16th at 7:00 pm. We welcome everybody at our monthly meetings, so even if its your first time please come out and join us. We always have plenty of beer to share and plenty of knowledge and ideas too. For our education topic we will be seeing the Crowler machine. This is a small scale 32 oz canning machine developed by Oskar Blues and Ball Canning for carft beer distribution, and now Midwest/Northern have one.

Cheers!
