Single hop experiment (S.H.E.)

Each year, the Nordeast Brewers Alliance does a single hop experiment where members of our club brew the same recipe but utilize one single different type of hop. We all come together for a tasting where we compare the bittering, flavor and aroma components imparted by different types of hops. We try to eliminate as many variables as possible in pursuit of a true apples-to-apples comparison from one hop to the next. In 2012 we had 16 different varieties at our tasting and we hope to have even more in 2013.

The execution of these recipes is open to all club members. The attendance at our tastings is open to the public. Details change from year to year so please consult the year-specific page for more information.

Use the navigation menu at the top of the page to check out results from each year.

  1. I just entered into this club on saturday at the Farmer’s Market on University. The member’s there seemed to think I could also join in this competition albeit a little late. Is this still a possibility. If so, I’ll brew with Motueka hops if someone hasn’t already taken it.

    1. Matt – Motueka it is! I’ll add you to the list. You need to brew between now and the 15th so we’re ready to taste in July! Feel free to shoot any questions to the group in the Google Group!
