  • Announcements/upcoming events/new business (15 min.)

o   Mid-month (BAMF) meet-up recap

§  dnon-profit discussion?  Matt & Nathan are researching this further­­

§  BJCP Judging: Becoming a beer judge entails learning about all styles of beer, why they differ, and how they should taste

o   April 1st, Milwaukee is the local exam.

o   Can schedule an exam in our area, need 5 or more people.  $50 for the first attempt, $30 to retake.

  • Need to take test to get certified.  There is learning material on the bjcp website, and setting up study groups is encouraged.

Anyone interested in getting certified in the near future?

o   BBQ moved to July 30th

Club Events:

  • Idea: Jack of all trades, July (21st) homebrewers camping and competing.  At the KOA in the Shockapee area.

o   Barrel-aging project update [Andrew N. and Nick]

§  Bring $25 if you want in. You’ll also be asked to contribute 5 gallons of wort at a later date.

§  Barrel is in the basement, rack was constructed time to see if it leaks.

o   Chocolate mint beer – Food science group presented on project

§  Used Hershey’s natural chocolate

§  Mint added via teabag, in differing strengths to test flavor profile.

§  Base is chocolate malt, carapils,2 row, flaked barley

  • Mashed at 157, various testing with steeping times
  • Going to need sensory input once final product is done.

§  For calculating pH

o   What effects do high bicarbonates (H2CO3) have on flavor?

§  Excellent question, does anyone have an answer?  Please tell us if you do.

o   You can buy reverse osmosis water and dilute with city water so that salts (__CHO3) are diluted.  This isn’t technically treating water, just diluting it.
