2012 celebration party recap and high gravity beer competition

Passing of the torch… er… “gavel.”

Members of the Nordeast Brewers Alliance came together at North Loop Wine & Spirits last weekend to celebrate 2012, a year of exponential growth and great accomplishment for our Minneapolis brew club. 2012 President Andrew recapped his annual review, covering all the initiatives and activities the club pursued and facilitated last year. We then voted-in the 2013 Executive Committee (ExComm):

  • Nate G. – President
  • Nick P. – Vice President
  • Matt P. – Director of Finance
  • Grant W. – Director of Communications
  • Tyler B. – Director of Operations

The only change in club leadership for 2013 was 2012 President Andrew N. passing the torch to club founder Nate. who detailed in his acceptance speech that he plans to focus on keeping last year’s momentum going with experiments and events. Nate also noted his plans to increase the club’s focus on volunteer efforts within Northeast Minneapolis, further cementing the NBA’s presence in the community.

To learn more about ExComm member responsibilities and updated election cycles, please read sections six and seven of the 2013 by-laws. If you’d like to get more involved in the club, please let any ExComm member know. We’re always happy to have some help and maybe even carve out a new official role for you if it makes sense to do so. You needn’t possess copious amounts of facial hair to apply, despite what these pictures might suggest.

Finally, we held our high gravity brew competition. The requirements were simple: the beer had to have been brewed in 2012 and needed to be greater than 7% ABV. We ran the competition as a best-in-show, awarding points on overall appeal instead of style adherence. Here are our winners:

  • FIRST PLACE with 36 points: Chad O.Толстяк Russian Imperial Stout (OG: 1.080 | FG: 1.012)
  • SECOND PLACE with 35 points: Mark G.Black Wee Heavy (OG: 1.087 | FG: 1.022)
  • THIRD PLACE with 17 points: Nate G.Delicious old ale (OG: 1.115 | FG: 1.022)

Congrats and thanks to all who attended the party and entered the competition. 2013 is already shaping up to be another great year for the best homebrew club in Minnesota!

As a special treat, resident funkmaster Nick P. brought some of his sours to share as well as a carbonated bottle from barrel #1 of the barrel project. After nine months in the barrel, 60 gallons of this sour Belgian blonde is just about ready for mass bottling!
